Emotional Setback For Ben Stokes After Injury Recurrence

England Test captain Ben Stokes expressed his frustration and emotions following his latest injury setback during England’s third Test defeat to New Zealand. Stokes suffered a hamstring injury recurrence while bowling on the third day in Hamilton, forcing him to leave the field mid-spell.

The all-rounder, who missed four Tests last year due to the same injury, admitted feeling emotional after realizing he might face another extended period of recovery. Reflecting on his disappointment, Stokes said, “I worked my ar** off to get to where I was with my body. It’s just sod’s law that when I finally feel young again, something happens.”

Stokes, who has already undergone knee surgery earlier this year, revealed how disheartened he felt immediately after the incident. The injury prevented him from batting in England’s second innings, as the risk of aggravating it further was not worth taking. England ultimately collapsed to 234 all out, succumbing to a heavy 423-run defeat.

Focus on Recovery and Future Matches

Despite his initial disappointment, Stokes shared that a night of rest helped him regain perspective. With England’s next Test scheduled in May against Zimbabwe, followed by a five-match series against India, the captain remains optimistic about his recovery timeline. He emphasized the importance of proper rehabilitation to ensure he can return to the field fully fit. Stokes remained pragmatic about the risks inherent in playing at the highest level, stating, “When you’re walking out there, you’re always putting yourself at risk of an injury.”

Acknowledging the challenges of recovery, Stokes remains committed to his role in the team. The all-rounder highlighted his efforts to be ready for this match and reiterated his determination not to let the injury limit his contributions in future games.

Stokes Refuses to Reduce Bowling Workload

Despite the injury occurring during a heavy bowling spell, Stokes made it clear he had no plans to reduce his workload. Known for his resilience and commitment, Stokes insisted he would not “hold back” when it comes to bowling in future matches. “I worked really hard to get myself into position to play the role that I did this game, and it’s just one of those unfortunate things,” he said.

Stokes’ mindset reflects his fighting spirit and determination to overcome setbacks, traits that have defined his career. With time to focus on rehabilitation, England fans will be hopeful to see their talisman back at full strength for the upcoming Test season.
