Off-spinner Tanush Kotian earned a national call-up as India strengthened their spin options for the final two Tests of the Border-Gavaskar series, following Ravichandran Ashwin’s unexpected retirement. The Mumbai cricketer joins Ravindra Jadeja and Washington Sundar in contention for the remaining matches in Melbourne and Sydney.
Regarded as a key prospect during India’s transitional phase, Kotian’s tall build and all-round capabilities with the bat make him a valuable addition to the team. He made his first-class debut during the 2018 Ranji Trophy group-stage match against Saurashtra at the Wankhede Stadium.
Although he took only two wickets in his debut match, he truly rose to prominence during the 2023-24 Ranji Trophy season. Kotian finished the season with an impressive 502 runs and 29 wickets, playing a pivotal role in Mumbai’s championship-winning campaign.
Tanush Kotian has featured in 33 first-class matches, claiming 101 wickets at an average of 25.70 with an economy rate of 3.31. With the bat, he has scored 1,525 runs at an impressive average of 41.21, including 13 half-centuries and two centuries.
He made an impactful start to the 2024-25 Ranji Trophy season, taking 12 wickets in two matches at an average of 16.66. Additionally, he was instrumental in Mumbai’s successful 2024-25 Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy campaign, picking up nine wickets in nine matches at an economy rate of 7.44.
Tanush Kotian scored a resilient 44 in his latest first-class match against Australia A
The spinner featured in the India A playing XI for the second unofficial Test against Australia A at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG). In the first innings, he was dismissed for a duck by Beau Webster and went wicketless with the ball, failing to make an impact early in the match.
However, in the second innings, Kotian showed resilience with the bat, scoring a determined 44 off 84 deliveries. His contribution played a key role in helping India set a target for Australia in the final innings of the game.
