Nathan Lyon Declares Full Fitness For Sri Lanka Tour

Veteran Australian spinner Nathan Lyon has confirmed his readiness to participate in the two-match Test series against Sri Lanka starting January 29. Lyon, who experienced a sore hip during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, assured fans of his recovery, stating he would be “100 per cent fit” for the tour. Right-hand batter Steve Smith will lead the 16-player squad as interim captain in the absence of Pat Cummins, who is on paternity leave and recovering from an ankle issue.

Lyon, alongside young spinners Todd Murphy and Matthew Kuhnemann, is expected to play a pivotal role on Sri Lanka’s turning pitches.

Lyon Reflects on Recovery and Pitch Expectations

Lyon revealed that his hip injury, which arose during the first Test against India, involved an aggravated bursa, causing pain during bowling. However, he expressed optimism about his recovery, noting improvements after a scan and treatment. “It doesn’t stop me from bowling. When I land on my hip, it’s pretty painful, but it will be okay,” Lyon told the Sydney Morning Herald. Despite Sri Lanka’s reputation for spin-friendly conditions, Lyon anticipates competitive cricket wickets similar to those in the 2022 series. He also acknowledged the hard work required on such tracks, dismissing the notion of Australia relying heavily on spinners.

Australian Squad and World Test Championship

The Australian squad for the Sri Lanka series includes notable call-ups and exclusions. Former U19 World Cup captain Cooper Connolly earns his maiden Test squad inclusion, while Nathan McSweeney returns after missing recent Tests. Spinners Kuhnemann and Murphy also make the squad, while pacers Josh Hazlewood and Mitchell Marsh remain sidelined due to injuries. Glenn Maxwell, Adam Zampa, and Peter Handscomb were not selected despite speculation.

Although the series is part of the ongoing World Test Championship (WTC) 2023-2025 cycle, the final spots are already confirmed, with Australia and South Africa securing the top two positions. The two Tests in Galle, scheduled from January 29 to February 10, serve as preparation for Australia’s WTC final against South Africa at Lord’s on June 11.

Lyon, with 539 Test wickets to his name, remains a key figure for Australia. In Sri Lanka, he has claimed 35 wickets in eight matches, including two five-wicket hauls. His experience and form will be critical as Australia eyes success in challenging subcontinental conditions.
