Rohit Sharma will continue as India‘s ODI captain, as confirmed by the BCCI. He is set to lead the press conference on January 18, during which the squads for the Champions Trophy and the England ODI series will be announced.
The three ODIs against England will serve as India’s final preparation in the format before their Champions Trophy opener against Bangladesh in Dubai on February 20. Rohit’s captaincy had been under scrutiny after he opted out of India’s XI for the final Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy earlier this month.
However, he clarified that the move should not be interpreted as a retirement. Rohit Sharma, 37, has been struggling with poor form and acknowledged making captaincy mistakes during the home series against New Zealand, which ended in a 3-0 whitewash for India.
He scored just 91 runs in six Test innings against New Zealand at an average of 15.16, and his performance dipped further in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, where he averaged only 6.20 across five innings.
Rohit Sharma trains with Mumbai squad ahead of Ranji Trophy’s second phase to regain form
In an effort to regain his form, Rohit joined the Mumbai squad for training sessions ahead of the second phase of the Ranji Trophy. After concluding his T20I career with a T20 World Cup victory in Barbados last year, Rohit Sharma now has the opportunity to guide India to an ODI world title at the upcoming Champions Trophy.
India will play all three of their league matches in Dubai, which is also set to host one of the semi-finals and potentially the final, should India advance. Since their World Cup final defeat to Australia in Ahmedabad on November 19, 2023, India have participated in only six ODIs.
