Murphy And Kuhnemann Reunite, Bound By A Common Obsession

Since departing for the Sri Lanka Test tour last week, Matt Kuhnemann has checked his Baggy Green more often than his passport. In his words to Cricbuzz, “Once every 10 minutes to make sure it’s there, and just to have a look at it.” This marks the first time he’s taken his Baggy Green overseas since his debut in India in early 2023.

However, it’s not just now that the 28-year-old left-arm spinner has been extra careful with the cherished symbol of his Test cricket status. He has been showing this level of attention at home too, ever since he first joined the Test squad nearly two years ago.

“It’s travelled a fair bit. I’ve moved a couple of times. I actually have a look at it a fair bit. Put it on and I always like to keep an eye on it. It obviously means everything to me,” Kuhnemann says, almost blushing while he does.

Todd Murphy, on the other hand, never places his Baggy Green on his head, despite checking on it as often as his spin bowling partner does. It has a “safe spot” at home, where it remains undisturbed.

“Nah, never goes on the head. Not sure that’s an unwritten rule. But I’m not doing it,” the young off-spinner tells this website.

Murphy and Kuhnemann Share Different Approaches to Their Baggy Greens

In contrast to Kuhnemann, Murphy has previously traveled abroad with his Baggy Green. He was part of the Ashes squad to England in mid-2023 and even played in the final three Tests of the series after Nathan Lyon’s unfortunate injury at Lord’s.

However, Murphy describes his Test cap as still feeling “fresh” when he packed it in his suitcase for the first time in 18 months, just 10 days ago.

Every time Murphy opens the drawer to “take a look at it,” he feels excitement. “It’s nice pulling it out and packing it again, bringing back good memories,” he says. He smiles when talking about the 24-year-old reuniting with his Baggy Green in Galle, noting the history it holds and the possibility of it being used again.

Murphy and Kuhnemann’s preparations for the Sri Lanka Tests highlight their growth since their last appearances. Murphy eagerly packs his Baggy Green, while Kuhnemann, after recovering from injury, has studied successful left-arm spinners.

Both reflect on their experiences, learning from Lyon and Jadeja. Their bond has strengthened, and as they reunite in Galle, they’re ready to contribute, driven by memories and progress in their cricket journeys.
