RPSG Group Secures Stake In Manchester Originals

The RPSG Group, owned by Sanjiv Goenka and the proprietors of the Indian Premier League (IPL) team Lucknow Super Giants, has successfully secured a significant stake in The Hundred franchise, Manchester Originals.

According to ESPNcricinfo, the group placed the highest bid, acquiring a 49% stake in the team. This acquisition comes after RPSG’s previous unsuccessful attempt to invest in the London Spirit franchise. The deal, reportedly worth around £116 million (over ₹1251 crore), marks another major investment by the Indian conglomerate in international cricket.

Strategic Partnership with Lancashire

As part of the agreement, Lancashire and RPSG Group have entered an eight-week exclusivity period to finalize the terms. Lancashire had been actively seeking a partner, particularly from the IPL, and viewed RPSG as their preferred choice.

The county club has hinted at the possibility of selling part of their 51% majority stake if it helps them reduce outstanding bank debts. In an official statement, Lancashire expressed excitement over the collaboration, highlighting their shared vision with RPSG to build a formidable team for Manchester and the broader North West region.

RPSG Group’s Growing Cricket Portfolio

Sanjiv Goenka has been steadily expanding RPSG Group’s presence in global cricket. After acquiring the Lucknow Super Giants franchise in 2021 for ₹7,090 crore, the group went on to buy the Durban franchise in South Africa’s SA20 league in 2022. Their latest investment in The Hundred further strengthens their influence in international cricket, positioning them as one of the most prominent investors in the sport.

With this new venture, RPSG aims to elevate Manchester Originals and contribute to the growth of The Hundred tournament. This strategic investment by RPSG Group in Manchester Originals highlights the growing influence of IPL franchise owners in global cricket leagues.

By securing a stake in The Hundred, RPSG not only expands its footprint beyond India and South Africa but also reinforces the increasing financial and operational collaboration between English and Indian cricket entities. With a shared vision for success, this partnership has the potential to elevate Manchester Originals, enhance the competitiveness of The Hundred, and bring a fresh wave of innovation and commercial growth to the tournament.
