India’s captain Rohit Sharma surpassed West Indies great Chris Gayle to move up the list of most sixes in ODI history. During the second ODI against England in Cuttack on Sunday, February 9, Sharma went past Gayle’s tally of 331 sixes.
The right-handed batter achieved the milestone with consecutive sixes off pacer Gus Atkinson in the second over of India’s run chase. He followed it up with another maximum in the next over, taking his tally to 334* sixes in 259 innings (at the time of writing).
Sharma now sits just behind former Pakistan captain Shahid Afridi, who holds the record with 351 sixes in 369 innings. With his current form, Sharma has a strong chance of breaking the all-time record soon.

Rohit Sharma’s recent form has been a topic of discussion after a series of below-par performances. The star opener managed only two runs in India’s four-wicket win over England in the first ODI. However, he has started strongly in the second match.
At the time of writing, Sharma has scored 29 runs off 18 balls, including three sixes and a four, showing positive intent at the crease.
Rohit Sharma Becomes India’s Fourth-Highest Run Scorer in ODIs in IND vs ENG 2nd ODI
Rohit Sharma reached another major milestone during the second ODI against England, surpassing former captain Rahul Dravid’s tally of 10,889 runs to become India’s fourth-highest run-scorer in ODI history.
The 37-year-old has now accumulated 10,897* runs in 259 innings, maintaining an impressive average of 49.08 and a strike rate of 92.50. He trails only Sourav Ganguly (11,363), Virat Kohli (13,906), and Sachin Tendulkar (18,426) on the all-time list for India.
Notably, Sharma now plays only ODIs and Test cricket, having retired from T20Is after leading India to victory in the 2024 T20 World Cup. His next major challenge as captain after the England series will be the 2025 Champions Trophy, starting on February 19.
