Jamie Overton delivered a perfect yorker to clean up Shubman Gill, securing England’s first breakthrough against India in the second ODI at the Barabati Stadium in Cuttack on Sunday, February 9.

The medium pacer’s stunning delivery shattered the off-stump, ending a 136-run opening stand between Gill and captain Rohit Sharma in the 17th over of India’s chase. Gill departed after scoring 60 off 52 balls, an innings that featured nine boundaries and a six.

This marked his second consecutive half-century against England, following his 87 off 96 balls in the first ODI. His contributions had helped India secure a four-wicket victory in Nagpur, giving them a 1-0 lead in the three-match series.

Shubman Gill demonstrated his adaptability in the series, excelling both as an opener and at No. 3 in the two matches. The 25-year-old remains a key player for India in the upcoming 2025 ICC Champions Trophy later this month.

Gill & Rohit made a solid Start in India’s 305-run chase vs England

A strong opening partnership between Shubman Gill and Rohit Sharma kept India on course in their 305-run chase against England in Cuttack. Rohit, in particular, took charge with an aggressive display against the English bowlers. At the latest update, India stood at 148/1 after 18.5 overs, with Rohit unbeaten on 80 and Virat Kohli joining him at the crease.

Earlier, England were bowled out for 304 in 49.5 overs. Joe Root top-scored with 69 off 72 balls, hitting six boundaries, while Ben Duckett struck 65 off 56 deliveries, including 10 fours. Liam Livingstone added 41, while Jos Buttler and Harry Brook made useful contributions in the 30s.

Ravindra Jadeja was India’s standout bowler, finishing with 3/35. Front-line pacers and debutant Varun Chakravarthy took one wicket each, while wicketkeeper KL Rahul was involved in three run-outs.
