Jasprit Bumrah’s availability for the upcoming Champions Trophy remains uncertain as India faces a crucial decision ahead of the February 11 deadline for final squad submission. The star fast bowler has been under medical observation due to a back issue, and his participation is now a subject of intense speculation. With India aiming for a strong campaign, selectors and team management are closely monitoring his fitness status before making a final call.
Jasprit Bumrah’s Injury Concerns
Bumrah, one of India’s premier fast bowlers, recently underwent a back scan at the BCCI’s Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru. The injury, suspected to be a stress reaction, has sidelined him since early January. Given his history of back issues, the medical team is taking a cautious approach before clearing him for competitive action.
BCCI’s Evaluation Process
The BCCI’s medical staff is working in tandem with selectors and team management to assess Bumrah’s fitness. The key factors influencing their decision include his ability to bowl pain-free, his recovery trajectory, and the potential risk of aggravation.
Despite his injury concerns, Bumrah was named in India’s provisional 15-man squad for the Champions Trophy on January 18. At that time, chief selector Ajit Agarkar stated that Bumrah was unlikely to be fit for the first few games of the England ODI series but hoped for a return in February.
Current Status and Timeline of His Recovery
Although there were expectations that Bumrah might play in the final ODI against England in Ahmedabad, he instead traveled to Bengaluru for further assessment. His rehabilitation period has been strictly monitored, with initial recommendations suggesting a five-week rest period before fresh scans.
Impact of His Absence and Potential replacements
Bumrah’s absence would be a significant blow to India’s bowling attack, particularly in conditions where his lethal accuracy and death-over skills make a crucial difference. Without him, India may need to rely heavily on Mohammed Shami, Mohammed Siraj, and other fast bowlers.
If Bumrah is ruled out, Harshit Rana is a strong contender for replacement, having played the first two ODIs against England. Other bowlers, such as Avesh Khan or Mukesh Kumar, could also be considered depending on their form and fitness.
ICC’s Squad Replacement Rules
Per ICC regulations, India must finalize their 15-man squad by February 11. After this date, any replacements require approval from the tournament’s technical committee, making this decision a critical one.

India’s Champions Trophy Group and Schedule
India is placed in Group A alongside Pakistan, Bangladesh, and New Zealand. Their matches are scheduled as follows:
February 20 – vs. Bangladesh
February 23 – vs. Pakistan
March 2 – vs. New Zealand
Since India will not travel to Pakistan due to government restrictions, all their matches will take place in Dubai.
