Virat Kohli has been the face of Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) for over a decade. While he is no longer the official captain, his leadership presence is undeniable. The franchise recently appointed Rajat Patidar as the captain for IPL 2025, but Mo Bobat, RCB’s Director of Cricket, has made it clear—Kohli doesn’t need a title to be a leader.

Virat Kohli’s Legacy as RCB Captain

Kohli led RCB from 2013 to 2021, a period marked by intense competition and memorable performances. Though he couldn’t secure an IPL trophy, his leadership was instrumental in shaping the team. Even after stepping down, he briefly captained in 2023 when Faf du Plessis was injured, reinforcing his ability to step up when needed.

RCB’s decision to appoint Rajat Patidar as captain surprised many. While fans expected Kohli to reclaim the role, the franchise opted for a fresh face. Patidar’s growth and performances made him a strong contender, and Kohli himself supported the decision, highlighting his selfless team-first approach.

Despite not holding the title, Kohli remains a driving force in the team. Leadership is second nature to him—whether through his batting, fielding, or sheer presence on the field. His commitment and intensity set the benchmark for the entire squad.

Mo Bobat’s Perspective on Kohli

Bobat acknowledges Kohli’s leadership, emphasizing that he doesn’t need a captaincy tag to lead. According to him, Kohli’s presence alone elevates the team, as seen in crucial match-winning moments.

Bobat said in an event in Bengaluru, “Of course, Virat was an option and that goes without saying and I know that the fans would’ve probably lent towards Virat in the first instance, but we’ve seen a lot of love for Rajat too. Look, my point on Virat would be that Virat doesn’t need a captaincy title to lead. I think leadership, as we’ve all seen, is one of his strongest instincts. I think it just comes naturally to him. He leads regardless.”

Andy Flower’s Take on Kohli

RCB head coach Andy Flower has immense respect for Kohli. He admires his work ethic and ability to uplift younger players. Kohli’s presence is not just motivating but also educational for the new generation of cricketers.

Flower said, “I think Virat’s energy and motivation and drive is really something special to behold in a 36-year-old cricketer that’s done everything in the game. I really respect him for it and it’s great role modelling for the younger players and younger overseas players to come and work with him as well. It was nice to watch it from within the same dressing room last year.”

Flower further added, “My experience with him, particularly in the first half of the last season when we were struggling and he was a huge part of turning that season around for us, in the way that he carried himself in his role modelling of how he works at the day and thinks about the day, that experience with him only made my respect for him grow. And I would say the same thing about our discussions over the captaincy of RCB coming season.”

Rajat Patidar’s Reaction to Captaincy

Patidar is excited and humbled to take on the captaincy. He acknowledges that Kohli’s mentorship will be crucial in guiding him. Having shared several partnerships with Kohli, Patidar feels confident about seeking his advice during critical situations.

Patidar said, “It’s a great opportunity for me to learn from one of the best. I have had a lot of partnerships with him, so I think I know him very well. So yeah, his experience and his ideas will definitely help me in my leadership role.”

With Patidar at the helm and Kohli continuing as the backbone of the team, RCB looks poised for an exciting season. The combination of youth and experience will be vital in their quest for the elusive IPL trophy.
