The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has officially laid down new Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) that will govern the Indian team’s travel, disciplinary regulations, and logistical management. These guidelines, set to take effect immediately, will be strictly implemented starting from the 2025 Champions Trophy in Dubai.
Rohit Sharma’s Initial Reaction
Indian skipper Rohit Sharma, when first questioned about these guidelines, responded with skepticism. His famous reply, “Who told you about this? Has it come from the official end?” highlighted the uncertainty surrounding these SOPs at the time. However, the ambiguity has now been cleared as BCCI has officially handed over the rulebook to all players.
BCCI’s Official SOPs: What’s Changed?
Players will no longer be allowed to bring personal staff, such as managers, chefs, assistants, and security personnel, unless explicitly approved by BCCI. Previously, many players traveled with a large entourage, including personal hairdressers and chefs. This change aims to ensure logistical efficiency and a team-focused approach.
Family Member Visitation Rules
BCCI has also placed limits on family member visits. If a player is away from India for more than 45 days, their spouse and children (under 18) can visit them only once per series for a two-week period. Given that the Champions Trophy lasts around four weeks, family members won’t be present for this tournament.
Mandatory Team Travel
All players must travel together on the team bus after practice sessions and matches. Personal transportation will not be permitted unless pre-approved by the head coach and the Chairman of the Selection Committee. This move aims to maintain team cohesion and discipline.

Attendance at Practice Sessions
Players are now required to stay for the entire duration of scheduled practice sessions and travel together to and from the venue. Missing practice sessions without valid reasons may be taken seriously by BCCI.
Commercial Endorsement Restrictions
A key rule is that players cannot participate in personal advertising shoots or endorsements during an ongoing series or tour. This prevents distractions and ensures complete focus on cricketing responsibilities.
Why These Rules Are Being Implemented
BCCI has clarified that the primary objective of these SOPs is to create a disciplined and cohesive team environment while maintaining professional standards. By eliminating distractions, the board hopes to enhance performance levels.
These regulations will significantly impact high-profile players accustomed to traveling with their personal staff. Many stars, including Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma, have previously been seen with private fitness trainers and chefs on tours. However, these privileges will now be curtailed.
Implications for the Champions Trophy 2025
With the new SOPs in effect, players must adjust quickly before the Champions Trophy begins on February 20, 2025. Team India will depart for Dubai on February 15, and strict adherence to these rules will be monitored throughout the tournament.
Enforcement and Compliance Measures
Hyderabad Cricket Association (HCA) secretary R Devraj has been appointed as the team manager for the upcoming ICC event. His responsibility will be to ensure that every player abides by these new SOPs.
“There is no going back on this and the players have made aware that the BCCI is very serious about the SOPs,” a team source in the know of the development, told Cricbuzz.
The touring manager will be responsible for ensuring compliance. Players violating these guidelines could face serious consequences, including fines or match suspensions. Although the intent behind these rules is clear, there could be resistance from some senior players who have enjoyed additional privileges for years. Balancing discipline with player comfort will be crucial.
