Ahead of India’s opening match in the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy against Bangladesh, former captain Virat Kohli reminisced about his fond memories of the tournament. He expressed his appreciation for the event, highlighting its fast-paced nature and intense competition.
India is set to kick off their campaign in Dubai on Thursday, February 20. Kohli recalled the last time India faced Bangladesh in their first match of an ICC tournament—the 2011 Cricket World Cup—which ultimately led to India’s historic triumph.
“The last time we played our first ICC tournament match against Bangladesh, we had a great run and ended up winning the World Cup in 2011. Those are some very special memories,” Kohli shared in a conversation with Star Sports.
Stressing the importance of a strong start in a short tournament, he pointed out that an early loss can be detrimental, as seen with Pakistan, who suffered a heavy defeat against New Zealand in the tournament opener on Wednesday in Karachi.

The High-Stakes Nature of the Champions Trophy
Kohli has always admired the Champions Trophy, as it rewards teams that have demonstrated consistency by securing a top-eight ranking over one or two years. He likened the competition to the T20 World Cup but in the ODI format, where every game matters.
“The pressure in this tournament is similar to the T20 World Cup. With only a few league matches, a poor start puts you in a tough spot. That’s why I enjoy it—you have to perform at your best right from the first game,” Kohli stated.
India’s journey in the 2011 World Cup started with a dominant performance against Bangladesh, where they posted a massive 370 runs. Centuries from Virender Sehwag and Kohli powered India to a comfortable 87-run victory, setting the tone for their championship-winning campaign.
Kohli’s Champions Trophy Legacy
Kohli’s record in the Champions Trophy speaks for itself. With 529 runs at an outstanding average of 88.16 and a strike rate of 92, including five half-centuries, he has consistently thrived under pressure. His ability to rise to the occasion in ODIs makes him a crucial player for India’s campaign.
India finds itself in a competitive Group A alongside Bangladesh, Pakistan, and New Zealand. With the Black Caps already securing a win over the hosts, India will be eager to make a strong statement in their opening match.
