Virat Kohli Fails To Score Big In 2025 Champions Trophy Opener Against Bangladesh

Virat Kohli was unable to make a significant impact as India began their 2025 Champions Trophy campaign against Bangladesh in Dubai on February 22. The experienced batter looked composed during his 22-run knock off 38 balls but failed to convert his start into a big score. His dismissal left India at 112/2 while chasing Bangladesh’s target.

Kohli was dismissed in the 23rd over by Rishad Hossain, who bowled a length delivery outside off. Attempting a cut shot, Kohli mistimed it and ended up slicing the ball straight to Soumya Sarkar at backward point. This marked his fifth dismissal against a leg-spinner in ODIs since 2024.

Missed Landmark and Upcoming Indo-Pak Clash

The 36-year-old had an opportunity to reach a historic milestone, needing just 15 more runs to become the fastest player to score 14,000 ODI runs. Unfortunately, he will have to wait for another chance, which will come in India’s highly anticipated clash against Pakistan on February 23 in Dubai.

India in Control Despite Top-Order Stumbles

Despite losing Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli after promising starts, India remained in command of the game. At the 29-over mark, the team was comfortably placed at 134/3, with Shubman Gill anchoring the innings at 53* and Axar Patel at the crease. Earlier, Rohit contributed a brisk 41 off 36 balls, forming a solid 69-run opening partnership.

Bangladesh, having chosen to bat first, were bowled out for 228 in 49.4 overs. Towhid Hridoy was the standout performer, scoring a determined 100 off 118 balls, supported by Jaker Ali’s 68 off 114. Their 154-run stand rescued Bangladesh from a precarious 35/5 start.

Mohammed Shami starred with the ball, securing his sixth ODI five-wicket haul, while Harshit Rana and Axar Patel contributed with three and two wickets, respectively. With India well-placed in the chase, they looked set to kick off their tournament with a victory.
