With the Indian Premier League (IPL) set to take place from March 22 to May 25, Indian cricketers will have to juggle multiple responsibilities. This season will not be entirely focused on white-ball cricket, as the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is planning measures to keep players in sync with the red-ball format.
This initiative is crucial due to the upcoming five-match Test series against England, which begins in Headingley on June 20. The BCCI aims to ensure that players remain in touch with Test cricket despite their IPL commitments. To achieve this, players may be required to engage in occasional red-ball practice sessions or participate in specialized activities targeting key Test players.
Behind-the-Scenes Planning and Key Meetings
The details of this strategy are still being finalized, with several meetings already conducted to discuss the implementation process. Discussions have been ongoing among key Indian team management officials and BCCI planners, particularly in Dubai, where players are currently competing in the Champions Trophy. Following India’s match against Pakistan, the decision-makers briefly outlined the plan, and further meetings are expected after the Champions Trophy concludes on March 9.
Typically, the BCCI does not interfere with players’ franchise commitments during the IPL. However, given India’s struggles in away Test series against England following IPL seasons, the board is taking a proactive approach.
Addressing Past Failures and Future Preparations
India’s track record in England after IPL seasons has been concerning. In 2011, they suffered a 4-0 series loss, followed by a 3-1 defeat in 2014 and a 4-1 setback in 2018. The 2021 series ended in a 2-2 draw, with India leading 2-1 before the final Test was postponed due to COVID-19. Additionally, recent Test performances have raised further concerns, including a rare home series defeat to New Zealand (3-0) and a 3-1 loss in Australia.
These results have prompted the BCCI to prioritize red-ball readiness ahead of the England tour. While specific details of the preparation plan remain undisclosed, the board has already started working on a structured approach to ensure players are well-prepared for the high-stakes Test series.
