Veteran Indian all-rounder Ravichandran Ashwin came to Virat Kohli’s defense after criticism arose over his performance during the 2024-25 Border-Gavaskar Trophy in Australia. Some had questioned Kohli’s technique after he was repeatedly dismissed in the slips, but Ashwin dismissed these concerns. Speaking on his YouTube channel Ash ki Baat, Ashwin explained that playing on grassy wickets in red-ball cricket naturally increases the chances of edging deliveries.
He emphasized that getting out in the slips is just one of many ways a batsman can be dismissed and should not be overanalyzed. Ashwin was firm in his stance that Kohli’s talent had not diminished, and critics should not make a big deal out of temporary setbacks.
Kohli’s Stunning Century Against Pakistan
Kohli silenced his doubters with a match-winning century in a crucial Champions Trophy encounter against Pakistan. On a slow Dubai pitch, the 36-year-old showcased his classic chase-master skills, steering India to victory while remaining unbeaten on 100.
His innings included seven boundaries and minimal false shots, proving his ability to perform under pressure. Ashwin, who recently retired from international cricket, praised Kohli’s composure and confidence, highlighting how this innings could mark the beginning of a resurgence. He stated that Kohli has always excelled in ODIs, calling it the “engine room” of his career. According to Ashwin, this knock could reignite Kohli’s dominance in international cricket after a relatively rough phase.
Historic Milestone and Ashwin’s Admiration
Kohli’s exceptional innings not only secured India’s place in the Champions Trophy semifinals but also saw him reach the remarkable milestone of 14,000 ODI runs. He became the fastest player to achieve this feat, surpassing previous records by a significant margin. Ashwin was in awe of Kohli’s achievement, acknowledging his 51st ODI hundred and record-breaking run tally.
He revealed that he had a gut feeling before the match that it would be Kohli’s day and was delighted to see the star batsman deliver. Calling the innings “stellar,” Ashwin reiterated that Kohli remains one of the finest players in the game and continues to set new benchmarks in international cricket.
