Ben Duckett

England’s opening batter Ben Duckett has etched his name in the record books by equaling the national record for the fastest 1,000 runs in One Day Internationals (ODIs). During England’s clash against Afghanistan at the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy in Lahore, Duckett reached this milestone in just 21 innings.

Ben Duckett’s Journey to 1,000 ODI Runs

Duckett entered the match against Afghanistan with 996 ODI runs, fresh from a record-breaking 165-run knock against Australia. His performance against one of England’s fiercest rivals played a crucial role in him reaching the 1,000-run landmark.

The Historic Moment

In the second over of England’s innings, Duckett elegantly drove Azmatullah Omarzai for a four through the covers to reach 1,000 ODI runs. This moment solidified his status as one of England’s top one-day batters.

Who Did Duckett Equal?

Before Duckett, three English players had held the record for the fastest to 1,000 ODI runs: Kevin Pietersen, Jonathan Trott and Dawid Malan. Each of these players had reached the milestone in 21 innings. With his innings against Afghanistan, Duckett joined this elite list.

While Duckett’s achievement is remarkable, the world record for the fastest 1,000 ODI runs belongs to: Fakhar Zaman (Pakistan) – 18 innings, Imam-ul-Haq (Pakistan) – 19 innings and Shubman Gill (India) – 19 innings.

Other notable players who reached the 1,000-run milestone in 21 innings include: Viv Richards (West Indies), Quinton de Kock (South Africa) and Babar Azam (Pakistan).

Duckett’s Unique Stat – The Longest Wait for 1,000 Runs

Though Duckett achieved the 1,000-run mark in just 21 innings, what sets him apart is the time taken between his ODI debut and reaching this milestone—nearly 8.5 years. This is the longest duration taken by any batter in the top 17 of this elite list.

Women’s ODI Records – A Different Perspective

In Women’s One Day Internationals (ODIs), Lindsay Reeler from Australia holds the world record for being the fastest to reach 1,000 runs, achieving this milestone in just 23 innings. Charlotte Edwards of England holds the England record, reaching 1,000 runs in 29 innings.

Duckett’s rise as a dominant opening batter adds further depth to England’s batting unit. His ability to accelerate the innings while maintaining a solid strike rate makes him a valuable asset for the team.
