Pakistan PM Urged To Address Champions Trophy Debacle In Parliament
Arun Dhumal Highlights Benefits of ICC's Champions Trophy Decision for BCCI and PCB

Pakistan’s disappointing exit from the Champions Trophy has sparked calls for accountability at the highest level. A senior government official, Rana Sanaullah, has stated that he will request Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif to discuss the cricket team’s poor performance in both Parliament and the Federal Cabinet. Sanaullah, the PM’s advisor on Political and Public Affairs, emphasized that while the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) operates independently, the government must still address the issues affecting the country’s cricket structure.

Pakistan, the tournament’s host, suffered heavy defeats against New Zealand (by 60 runs) and India (by six wickets), leading to their early elimination. Their final group-stage match against Bangladesh was abandoned due to persistent rain in Rawalpindi.

Concerns Over PCB’s Governance and Spending

Sanaullah highlighted the long-standing instability within the PCB, noting frequent changes in leadership over the past decade. He pointed out that the previous caretaker government had completely removed PCB from federal control before the general elections. The advisor also raised concerns about the deteriorating state of cricket at the grassroots level, including clubs, universities, and districts.

He stressed the need for accountability in PCB’s financial management, questioning the substantial salaries and perks given to officials and mentors. According to him, some mentors receive up to five million rupees but have publicly admitted they are unclear about their responsibilities. “These expenditures should be scrutinized by the country and Parliament,” he insisted.

Calls for Systemic Reforms in Pakistan Cricket

Sanaullah criticized the PCB’s lavish spending on players and officials, comparing it to standards found in developed European nations, despite Pakistan’s economic struggles. He urged the Prime Minister to personally intervene and reform the cricket administration.

“For too long, individuals have been securing positions within the PCB based on personal interests rather than merit, leading to the current crisis in Pakistan cricket,” he remarked. He stressed the need for a stable and well-structured board, similar to successful cricketing nations worldwide. The controversy surrounding the Champions Trophy performance has reignited debates over governance and the necessity for structural changes to restore Pakistan cricket’s credibility.
