3 Reasons Why Ravichandran Ashwin Might Be The Key Player For CSK In IPL 2025

Ravichandran Ashwin rejoined his former IPL team, Chennai Super Kings (CSK), ahead of the 2025 season. The experienced spin-bowling all-rounder was released by Rajasthan Royals and was not retained during the auction.

CSK invested significantly in bringing Ashwin back, spending ₹9.75 crores in the 2025 mega auction. He initially started his IPL journey with CSK in 2009 and remained with the team until 2015.

Having played 212 IPL matches, Ashwin has claimed 180 wickets at an average of 29.82 and an economy rate of 7.12, making him a valuable asset. Returning to CSK at 38 after retiring from international cricket, his experience could make him the team’s most vital player. Here are three reasons why:

#1 Versatility with the ball

Ravichandran Ashwin has established himself as one of the greatest spinners in cricket history, bringing a wealth of experience from both international cricket and the IPL.

Having represented multiple franchises across various conditions and roles, Ashwin has consistently showcased his skills, particularly with the ball. He is not only adept at controlling the middle overs and outsmarting batters, as spinners typically do, but also excels in different match situations.

His versatility allows him to bowl effectively in the powerplay when needed, while also delivering crucial overs in the latter stages of an innings—something he has successfully done in the past.

#2 Enhances the batting lineup’s depth and stability

In addition to his exceptional bowling skills, Ravichandran Ashwin has proven to be a reliable batter. He has accumulated 800 runs in the IPL and over 3,500 runs in Test cricket.

During the Tamil Nadu Premier League (TNPL) 2024, Ashwin impressed with the bat, scoring 252 runs in nine innings while playing in the top order. Although he typically bats in the lower middle order, his ability to adapt makes him a valuable floater, providing CSK with not just depth but also balance and flexibility.

If CSK loses early wickets, Ashwin can be promoted up the order, allowing key finishers like MS Dhoni and Ravindra Jadeja to retain their ideal batting positions even in pressure situations.

#3 Ravichandran Ashwin’s experience and impressive track record at Chepauk

The spin-friendly conditions at Chepauk provide a significant advantage for Ravichandran Ashwin, who has extensive experience playing at the venue, given his roots in Tamil Nadu. His familiarity with the pitch, combined with his past performances there, makes it an ideal setting for him.

In the IPL, Ashwin has played 42 matches at Chepauk, claiming 50 wickets at an impressive economy rate of 6.26 and an average of 20.5.

As the most experienced spinner in the squad, he will undoubtedly lead CSK’s spin attack. His strong performances at home could play a crucial role in the team’s success, increasing their chances of securing more victories.
