New Zealand pacer Matt Henry acknowledged that India had the upper hand in their Champions Trophy match at the Dubai International Stadium due to their prior experience playing at the venue. Despite this advantage, Henry praised India’s disciplined bowling attack, which played a crucial role in their triumph.
India’s bowlers, particularly spinner Varun Chakravarthy, delivered a remarkable performance that restricted New Zealand’s batting lineup. Chakravarthy’s five-wicket haul proved to be the turning point, helping India extend their unbeaten streak in the tournament. The victory strengthened India’s momentum ahead of their semi-final clash against Australia, reinforcing their position as strong title contenders.
Matt Henry in a post match conference said: “ I think, obviously, the way to have four frontline spinners was a really effective way to play. I think having that luxury of knowing (conditions)…they played to the conditions beautifully. That was probably the challenge for us,”
Varun Chakravarthy’s Match-Winning Spell
The highlight of the match was Varun Chakravarthy’s exceptional spell, where he dismantled the New Zealand batting order with a five-wicket haul. His accuracy and variations left the opposition struggling to build partnerships. Former cricketer Sunil Gavaskar, speaking to India Today, backed Chakravarthy’s inclusion in the semi-final lineup, emphasizing his ability to exploit spin-friendly conditions in Dubai. Gavaskar also supported Hardik Pandya’s role as the second seamer, stating that India’s combination of spinners and a pace-bowling all-rounder provided the right balance for the knockout stages.
The Spin Strategy for Dubai’s Conditions
India’s decision to rely heavily on spinners was further validated by former cricketer Harbhajan Singh, who advocated for a four-spinner strategy in Dubai. After India successfully defended a total of 249 runs and secured a 44-run victory, Harbhajan stressed the importance of leveraging the pitch conditions.
With the semi-final approaching, India’s strategy of playing multiple spinners, along with Pandya as a supporting pacer, appears to be the way forward. Their dominant bowling display against New Zealand serves as a strong indicator of their readiness for the high-stakes encounters ahead.
