India’s all-rounder Axar Patel claims his new position in the batting order has been a great boost for his confidence, allowing him to play, especially under pressure, with more freedom than before. He says earlier, his lower-order batting role had made him feel restricted in contributing better with the bat, and value-wise, that has changed since his brilliant displays in the Champions Trophy, specifically against New Zealand.

Axar’s vital innings of 42 off 61 balls at No. 5 against New Zealand were crucial to India’s 44-run win. It has given Patel the confidence to play according to the team’s demands rather than under pressure from the lower-order responsibilities. His confidence has turned him into an asset for India, while the ability to perform under pressure adds to it.

“I know that there are more batsmen behind me”- Axar Patel

India’s Axar Patel, the all-rounder, has said that a new batting position given to him has increased his confidence, allowing him to bat freely. He believed previously that playing in the lower order restricted him from contributing well with the bat. His Champions Trophy performances, especially against New Zealand, have served as a great platform to fortify his position as a reliable member in the white-ball scheme for India.

“When I get an opportunity, I try to bat based on the situation. But now, the approach has changed. Earlier, I used to come down and had to make runs quickly. Now, I know that there are more batsmen behind me, so I can play accordingly,” Axar said.

“I know that I have a lot of time. It depends on the requirements of the team as well, and if I feel that I have to attack the spinner, I play accordingly, like I had a partnership in this match (vs NZ), and we could have a good total,” he added.

The time has come when semi-final games take place, and as India goes against Australia in one of them held in Dubai on March 4, Axar Patel could be instrumental with both bat and ball. Given that the pitches favor the spin, along with his ability to soak up the most intense moments, he could be one of those well-drafted player’s turns into the business end of the tournament for India.
