The Champions Trophy 2025 has already given cricket fans plenty of talking points. One of the biggest surprises was the last-minute inclusion of wrist-spinner Varun Chakravarthy in India’s 15-member squad, replacing promising young batsman Yashasvi Jaiswal. Following Chakravarthy’s sensational five-wicket haul against New Zealand, India’s skipper Rohit Sharma shed light on why the team management opted for an extra spinner over an additional batter.
Background on the Champions Trophy 2025 Selection
India’s 15-member squad saw some unexpected changes before the tournament. While Jaiswal was initially expected to be part of the lineup, the selectors decided to bring in Chakravarthy as an extra spin option. Given the conditions in Dubai, this decision was based on strategic considerations rather than Jaiswal’s individual performance.
Varun Chakravarthy’s ODI Debut and Performance
Chakravarthy had already made a name for himself in T20Is with stellar performances since his return to international cricket in October 2024. His inclusion in the ODI squad was justified when he picked up a five-wicket haul in his very first Champions Trophy match, helping India secure a crucial 44-run victory over New Zealand.
Rohit Sharma’s Explanation for Selection
Speaking about the selection decision, Rohit Sharma clarified that the team needed an extra spinner to adapt to the slow, turning pitches in Dubai. The team management weighed the pros and cons and decided that sacrificing a batter for an additional spin option was the right call.
Rohit explained, “With Varun, especially, we felt we had to sacrifice a batsman, which we thought it’s only five games in this tournament. And it’s very unlikely that that batter is going to play at any stage, unless there’s an injury. And you don’t make team thinking the worst, which is someone getting injured. If somebody is injured, you can always call them upon. But with Varun, we knew that there is a chance that he might play without any injury in the team. I know there are four spinners and all of that, but we played four spinners today.”
The Role of Spin-Friendly Conditions in Dubai
India’s decision was largely influenced by the nature of the pitches in Dubai. The team closely observed recent matches, including those in the ILT20 league, which revealed a strong preference for slower bowlers. Rohit also pointed out that India already had a backup batter in Rishabh Pant. This gave the team confidence in going with an additional spin option instead of another batsman.
Rohit further added, “So, looking at the surfaces here, hearing about what has happened in Dubai in the past two months. There’s a lot of cricket that has been played. So, we somehow kind of knew that the surfaces are going to be slow. We were watching ILT20, which was played here. And we thought the slower bowlers will be a lot more helpful. And then we’ve got a batter sitting in the dugout anyway. And if we need a batter to come in, Rishabh is there for us. So, we thought with an extra option of the spin, there’s always a chance that we can play those guys. So that was pretty much the thinking behind that.”

Varun Chakravarthy’s Unique Skills as a Wrist Spinner
Unlike traditional leg-spinners, Chakravarthy’s mystery spin makes him a difficult bowler to read. His ability to bowl variations without significant changes in action keeps batters guessing. With four quality spinners in the squad, India is relying heavily on their slow bowlers.
Chakravarthy’s inclusion adds a new dimension to their attack, especially in middle overs where wickets are crucial. With a semi-final clash against Australia looming, Chakravarthy’s role will be crucial. Given Australia’s struggles against spin, he could be a game-changer once again.
