The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has suffered a staggering financial setback after hosting the ICC Champions Trophy 2025. Reports indicate that the PCB incurred losses amounting to approximately USD 85 million (INR 869 crore)—an 85% loss on their investment in the tournament.
Pakistan played only one home match in Lahore before travelling to Dubai, where they faced India, while their final group-stage match against Bangladesh was abandoned due to rain. The team’s early exit from the tournament meant that the expected revenue from ticket sales and sponsorships failed to materialize.
To prepare for the event, the PCB invested heavily in upgrading Rawalpindi, Lahore, and Karachi stadiums, spending PKR 18 billion (USD 58 million)—50% more than initially budgeted. An additional USD 40 million was allocated for event preparations, yet the board reportedly received only USD 6 million in hosting fees. This enormous financial disparity has left the PCB struggling to manage its finances.
Cost-Cutting Measures Implemented
In response to these losses, the PCB has undertaken drastic cost-cutting measures. The match fees for the national T20 championship were reduced by 90%, dropping from Rs 40,000 to Rs 10,000. Similarly, reserve player payments were slashed by 87.5%, significantly affecting domestic cricketers.
The board initially implemented these reductions without any official announcement, but PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi later intervened, instructing the domestic cricket department to reassess the matter.
Another major change involved accommodation arrangements. Previously, players and staff were provided five-star hotel stays, but due to financial constraints, economy hotels have now become the norm. These budgetary restrictions are expected to continue affecting Pakistan cricket in the coming months.
The Road Ahead for Pakistan Cricket
The PCB’s financial turmoil comes at a time when Pakistan’s national cricket team is already struggling in international competitions. The early exit from the Champions Trophy has raised concerns over the team’s performance, while the monetary losses have put a significant strain on the cricket administration in the country.
Moving forward, the board may need to find alternative sources of revenue, such as increased sponsorships, better broadcasting deals, or improved financial planning, to recover from this massive setback.
Despite these challenges, the PCB will have to balance its cost-cutting strategies with ensuring the continued development of domestic cricket. If financial instability persists, it could severely impact Pakistan’s ability to compete at the highest level in international cricket.
