Mumbai Indians (MI) head coach Mahela Jayawardene has shared an update on the fitness status of star pacer Jasprit Bumrah, who remains sidelined due to a back injury sustained during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy in January. Since then, Bumrah has yet to show significant progress in regaining full fitness and was also absent when India secured the Champions Trophy title under Rohit Sharma in Dubai.
According to Jayawardene, MI is closely monitoring Bumrah’s recovery at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bengaluru. “Jasprit is currently undergoing rehabilitation at NCA, and his progress is being evaluated daily. We are awaiting further updates on his condition,” Jayawardene stated during a press interaction in Mumbai. The MI coach acknowledged the challenge of missing a bowler of Bumrah’s caliber, emphasizing his importance to the team.
MI’s Strategy Without Bumrah
With Bumrah’s availability for IPL 2025 uncertain, Jayawardene indicated that MI would adapt their team combinations accordingly. “Not having him is tough, but we’ll adjust our strategies and experiment with different combinations early in the tournament,” he explained. Bumrah last played in the fifth Test against Australia in Sydney, where he left the field for scans on Day 2. MI’s bowling lineup will need to compensate for his absence, particularly given his impact last season, where he led the team’s wicket-taking charts with 20 scalps in 13 matches.
Managing Bumrah’s Workload
Former MI bowling coach Shane Bond has urged the Indian team to carefully manage Bumrah’s workload to prevent further injuries. Bond warned that pushing Bumrah too hard, especially in long-format cricket, could be detrimental. “He is crucial for the next World Cup, so managing his workload is essential. Playing him in too many consecutive Test matches could be a serious risk. Another injury in the same area might even threaten his career,” Bond told ESPNcricinfo. Given Bumrah’s history of back injuries, the Indian team and MI will need to make calculated decisions about his return to competitive cricket.
As IPL 2025 approaches, MI will have to adjust their plans while keeping an eye on Bumrah’s recovery timeline. Fans and cricket experts alike are eagerly waiting for further updates on the pacer’s fitness and potential return to action.
