The much-anticipated opening match of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 saw Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) take on defending champions Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) at the iconic Eden Gardens in Kolkata. The game was filled with high-intensity action, but the spotlight was firmly on Phil Salt, the explosive English batter, who led RCB to a convincing seven-wicket victory.
Phil Salt’s Heroic Performance
Phil Salt, who was part of KKR in the previous edition, was released ahead of the IPL 2025 mega auction. RCB saw the potential in him and picked him up for a hefty Rs 11.50 crore. The irony? His first game for RCB was against his former team, and he made sure to leave a lasting impact. Salt opened the innings with Virat Kohli and smashed a stunning 56 off just 31 balls. His innings was laced with nine boundaries and two sixes, setting the stage for RCB’s dominant chase of 175 runs.
RCB’s Chase: Dominance from the Start
Virat Kohli (59* off 36 balls) and Salt gave RCB a fiery start, accumulating 95 runs for the first wicket in just 8.3 overs. This explosive partnership put immense pressure on the KKR bowlers, making the chase look effortless. After Salt’s dismissal, Liam Livingstone and Rajat Patidar ensured that RCB crossed the finish line in just 16.2 overs, with seven wickets in hand.
KKR’s Batting Performance
Ajinkya Rahane played a crucial 56-run knock, partnering with Sunil Narine (44 off 26 balls) for a 103-run stand. Their partnership provided KKR with a solid foundation but lacked firepower towards the end. Krunal Pandya’s brilliant spell (3/29) and Josh Hazlewood’s sharp pace (2 wickets) restricted KKR to 174/8, a total that seemed competitive but was ultimately not enough.

Phil Salt’s Post-Match Comments
Royal Challengers Bengaluru’s (RCB) opener Phil Salt expressed his delight after a match-winning partnership with Virat Kohli in their seven-wicket victory over Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) at Eden Gardens in the IPL 2025 opener. Reflecting on his performance and familiarity with the ground, Salt emphasized the competitiveness of the league, remarking that “there are no friends out there.”
“Probably the partnership (talking about the most pleasing thing with the bat), we (Kohli and I) haven’t batted much together and to go out there and put a partnership was really pleasing. It is a ground I know and I know these guys (KKR) very well. Yes, it did (the ball came on nicely in the second innings) and you just needed to stand still and hit the ball, it does make a difference. That is what we spoke about as a batting group, very pleased with the outcome. Had a great time here last year and won the trophy. Obviously, there are no friends out there (in this league)” said Phil Salt after RCB’s seven-wicket win against KKR.
RCB’s clinical performance in both batting and bowling proved why they are strong contenders for IPL 2025. KKR, on the other hand, will need to regroup and address their middle-order concerns. With an exciting season ahead, fans can expect more thrilling encounters.
