The IPL 2025 season opener between Mumbai Indians (MI) and Chennai Super Kings (CSK) saw a shocking move by MI’s management as they replaced Rohit Sharma with an untested spinner, Vignesh Puthur, as their Impact Substitute. The 23-year-old from Kerala, who had never played senior-level domestic cricket, made a stunning debut, grabbing three crucial wickets in three overs.
Who is Vignesh Puthur?
Vignesh Puthur hails from Malappuram, Kerala. Despite having no senior-level domestic experience, he was noted for his talent in age-group cricket. He started as a medium pacer but later transitioned into left-arm wrist spin, a rare and valuable skill in modern cricket. His journey from a small town to the IPL is nothing short of inspiring.
MI made a bold decision to substitute Puthur for Rohit Sharma, a move that shocked fans and experts alike. With the team defending a modest 155-run total, Puthur had a golden opportunity to prove himself.
IPL Dream Debut against CSK
Coming into the attack in the eighth over, Puthur faced CSK’s well-set skipper, Ruturaj Gaikwad. Displaying immense confidence, he got Gaikwad caught at long-off for 53, marking his first IPL wicket in a dream start.
In his next over, Puthur nearly dismissed Shivam Dube with a deceptive googly. A few deliveries later, Dube attempted a big shot but was caught at long-on, giving the young spinner his second wicket.
Puthur continued his stellar spell, removing Deepak Hooda in his third over. His variations and ability to control the game under pressure impressed everyone, including MI’s team management.
Why Was Puthur Picked?
Mumbai Indians’ scouts had been tracking Puthur since his Kerala Cricket League (KCL) performances. Though his stats were not extraordinary, his unique bowling style and fearless attitude earned him a place in MI’s squad. Initially, Puthur was a medium pacer, but local cricketer Mohammed Sherif suggested he try wrist spin. Though he didn’t know what a ‘chinaman’ delivery was initially, he worked hard to perfect the craft.
His performances for St. Thomas College in the Kerala College Premier T20 League helped him gain recognition. Later, he played for Jolly Rovers Cricket Club, where he became a key bowler. Puthur represented Alleppey Ripples in the KCL and later played in the Tamil Nadu Premier League. Though he picked up only two wickets in three matches, MI scouts saw his potential.
Coming from a humble background, Puthur is the son of an auto-rickshaw driver. His journey to IPL was filled with financial struggles and constant challenges to prove himself.

Mumbai Indians’ Mega Auction Gamble
Despite his limited domestic experience, Mumbai Indians believed in his talent and secured him at the Mega Auction in November 2024. This move proved to be a masterstroke. After his impactful debut, Puthur will aim for consistency in IPL 2025 and a potential call-up to Kerala’s senior team. His journey is just beginning, and cricket fans will be eager to see more of him.
