MS Dhoni isn’t just another player. He is everything of CSK. Since the inception of the IPL, he’s been the face, the heart, and the brain of the franchise. He’s turned average squads into title contenders and pulled off heists in the most Dhoni-esque fashion. With Dhoni at the helm, CSK became the model franchise.
Stable, composed, and efficient. He wasn’t just leading from the front; he was scripting stories from behind the scenes whether it was mentoring future stars or making genius field placements. But for the first time, there’s a change in the wind. This season, instead of celebrating his iconic calmness and match-winning finishes, fans and critics alike are starting to wonder this is the beginning of the end.
A Tumultuous Start to IPL Season 18
This season, however, things haven’t gone according to plan. CSK have struggled to find their rhythm, dropping crucial games and making uncharacteristic errors. Against RCB, Dhoni walked out to bat at No. 9. For someone who once dictated chases with surgeon-like precision, this was shocking. Whatever the reason, it lit up debate across the cricketing world.
Ricky Ponting’s Take on Dhoni
Ricky Ponting, former Aussie skipper and current Punjab Kings coach, isn’t buying into the criticism. He stated, “‘Well his keeping is not getting any worse, that’s one thing I do know; he’s not missing many standing up to the stumps against the spinners, as good as ever.”
Ponting believes CSK’s methods are above board they’re calculated, not impulsive. And if Dhoni feels he should bat late, then there’s a reason for it. Simple.

He added, “Look, you are not going to argue with anything CSK do, they are one of the most successful teams in IPL history. They have had consistent coaching for a long time and generally make the right decisions. With the impact player rule now, Dhoni bats after other serious ball strikers within their own right. I guess he has played a slightly diminished role in the last couple of years, just coming in for the last 10-12 balls and trying to make a big impact. Dhoni is still dangerous in the IPL.”
With the Impact Player rule shaking up strategies, Dhoni now often finds himself behind younger, more aggressive hitters. His job is come in late and finish strong. When asked on a lighter note if he sees Dhoni ever retiring, Ponting responded: “It might just depend on how this season goes. If he can have a real impact with the bat, I think he will keep playing. If his batting output drops, he might start thinking about it. He’s been a terrific player for a long time.”
Stephen Fleming’s Assurance
CSK coach Stephen Fleming shut down the rumors, saying Dhoni is “still going strong.” But the speculation won’t die down that easily. But the story is different, earlier his strike rate was a blazing 140+. Now, it hovers lower especially when he comes in during crisis moments. He’s no longer the finisher who ends games with a flourish. The cameos are shorter, and the impact is inconsistent.
