MS Singh Dhoni began his career batting up the order but later made a shift down the order to provide stability. Slowly as years progressed, he became one of the finest finishers in the game. With the calibre to score quick runs, Dhoni had he was able to score hundreds for India batting at 5 and 6.

Sourav Ganguly, under whom MS Dhoni made his debut has recently said that he would’ve always preferred Dhoni batting up the order. The current BCCI President that had Dhoni batted at the top then he would’ve been even more destructive. Furthermore, Ganguly regarded him as one of the great players in world cricket.

“He’s one of the great players of world cricket, not just a finisher. Everyone talks about the way he finishes lower down the order. I always believed that he should bat up the order because he was so destructive,” said Ganguly in conversation with Mayank Agarwal.

Sourav Ganguly, who handed MS Dhoni the debut cap, spoke about the latter’s ability to clear the fence majority of the times in one day cricket. The Ranchi-born was indeed a special player for Ganguly.

“It was fantastic. If you look over a period of time in the history of one-day cricket, the best players can find the fence under pressure consistently. MS Dhoni was one of them and that’s why he was special,” 

Agarwal then asked Ganguly if it was him who picked him in the Indian side, to which he replied. Sourav Ganguly went on to talk about how he entrusted MS Dhoni with the wicketkeeping duties for India back then.

“Ya that’s true, but that’s my job isn’t it? That’s every captain’s job to pick the best and make the best team possible.”

“You go by your instincts, you go by the faith on that player that he’ll deliver for you. And, you know, I’m happy that Indian cricket got Mahendra Singh Dhoni because he’s unbelievable,” Ganguly said.

Meanwhile, MS Dhoni has been out of action since the 2019 semi-final encounter against New Zealand. He will be looking to make a comeback for Chennai Super Kings later this year in the IPL.
