In a landmark step towards inclusivity and humanitarian aid, the International Cricket Council (ICC) has unveiled a dedicated task force aimed at supporting displaced Afghan women cricketers.

Announced by ICC chairman Jay Shah via his official X (formerly Twitter) account on Sunday, this initiative involves key collaborations with the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB), and Cricket Australia (CA).

The plan includes the creation of a special fund to provide direct financial assistance, helping affected players sustain their connection with the sport amidst personal turmoil.

Holistic Support Through High-Performance Programmes

Beyond monetary aid, the ICC’s initiative will include a high-performance programme tailored to the unique needs of displaced Afghan women athletes. This programme promises access to elite coaching, international-standard facilities, and mentorship opportunities.

The goal is not only to keep these players engaged in cricket but also to support their overall development during a time of displacement and uncertainty. The ICC envisions a system where these athletes can continue to hone their skills and gain exposure, regardless of the difficult circumstances they face.

A Symbol of Unity and Global Solidarity

Jay Shah emphasized the ICC’s unwavering dedication to diversity and empowerment, asserting that every cricketer deserves the chance to succeed, irrespective of their origins or challenges. He underlined that the involvement of BCCI, ECB, and CA highlights a united front in supporting resilience and growth through the spirit of cricket.

Shah also framed the initiative as part of the ICC’s broader mission to use the sport as a powerful tool for good—offering hope, opportunity, and continuity even in the toughest of times. This step not only safeguards the future of Afghan women in cricket but also strengthens the sport’s role in encouraging global unity and empathy.

In addition to launching this initiative, the ICC Board also approved the audited financial statements for the fiscal year ending in 2024. These decisions came following recommendations made by the Chief Executives Committee, further reinforcing the ICC’s commitment to transparent and progressive governance in global cricket.
