Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) CEO Venky Mysore has publicly backed his team despite a rough IPL 2025 season so far. Speaking at a recent promotional event, Mysore described KKR as a “resilient” unit and encouraged the players to stay inspired by past comebacks.
The defending champions currently face a steep challenge, having lost five of their eight games. With just six points on the table, they now need to win at least five out of their remaining six matches to qualify for the playoffs. Still, Mysore expressed full confidence in the squad, emphasizing the unpredictable nature of the IPL and urging fans to look beyond the win-loss column.
Drawing Strength from History
Mysore cited KKR’s remarkable turnarounds in 2014 and 2021 as examples to inspire the current squad. In 2014, after a poor start with only two wins from seven games, the team scripted an incredible comeback by winning nine consecutive matches and eventually clinched the IPL title.
That momentum carried them through the Champions League as well, where they won five more in a row, setting a record of 14 consecutive victories. Similarly, in 2021, the team had a 2-5 start but went on to reach the finals. Mysore believes such comebacks underline KKR’s spirit and stressed that one spark of inspiration could shift the momentum. “Anything can happen in this format,” he said, expressing hope for a turnaround this season as well.
Abhishek Nayar Returns at a Critical Juncture
Adding a boost to the team’s morale, former assistant coach Abhishek Nayar has returned to the KKR setup. After a brief stint as Team India’s assistant coach, Nayar rejoined KKR just days after news emerged about the termination of his BCCI contract. His return comes at a crucial moment when KKR’s batting unit, apart from captain Ajinkya Rahane, has been struggling under pressure.
Rahane welcomed Nayar’s return, praising him as a passionate mentor who understands each player well. The team hopes Nayar’s presence can help them reset and regroup for the remaining fixtures. As Mysore noted, the IPL often produces surprises, and KKR is counting on their experience and resilience to make a strong comeback.
