Chennai Super Kings’ (CSK) traditional strategy of relying on experienced players backfired badly this season, leaving them near the bottom of the IPL points table. Their troubles, according to coach Stephen Fleming, can be traced back to the auction in Jeddah months earlier.
Fleming admitted that the team’s inability to build a balanced squad has led to a disappointing campaign. CSK lost seven out of their first nine matches, and Fleming accepted that their auction choices simply didn’t work.
“It’s tough to say, but based on our performances, we clearly didn’t get it right,” Fleming said after CSK’s loss to Sunrisers Hyderabad. Although he initially defended the team’s methods, he acknowledged that the game is evolving and that other franchises have done a better job during the auction.

Acceptance of Mistakes and the Need for Change
Fleming highlighted that the auction is unpredictable, comparing it to buying 25 houses in one night, often leaving participants mentally and physically drained. He emphasized that while they still have a talented squad, things didn’t fall into place as they had hoped.
“You take responsibility from the top down,” he said, admitting that CSK must reflect seriously on their auction and playing strategies. Players like Rahul Tripathi, Deepak Hooda, and Vijay Shankar failed to perform, and CSK’s hesitation in giving opportunities to fresh talent early in the season proved costly. Toward the later stages, young players like Ayush Mhatre, Shaik Rasheed, and Dewald Brevis began to show signs of promise, suggesting a better future if nurtured well.
Injuries, Inconsistency, and Looking Ahead
The season’s woes were compounded by injuries, particularly to captain Ruturaj Gaikwad, and the constant chopping and changing of the playing XI in search of the right formula. Fleming, as the chief architect of CSK’s strategies, accepted full responsibility for the poor season, stressing that the team lacked a settled game plan.
“We tried too many combinations, looking for something that wasn’t quite there,” he explained. Fleming admitted that the squad’s struggles required serious soul-searching, starting with himself. Despite this season’s disappointment, he remains optimistic, believing that with a few adjustments and the emergence of young talent, CSK can bounce back stronger in the future.
