On Monday, May 12, Virat Kohli, the former India Test captain and batting legend, officially announced his retirement from Test cricket, sharing the news via his social media account. The number 269 mentioned in his Instagram post refers to his Test cap number.
The 36-year-old cricketer made his Test debut in June 2011 against the West Indies in Kingston, becoming the 269th player to represent India in the format. His caption stated:
“There’s something deeply personal about playing in whites. The quiet grind, the long days, the small moments that no one sees but that stay with you forever. As I step away from this format, it’s not easy — but it feels right. I’ve given it everything I had, and it’s given me back so much more than I could’ve hoped for.”
“I’m walking away with a heart full of gratitude — for the game, for the people I shared the field with, and for every single person who made me feel seen along the way. I’ll always look back at my Test career with a smile. #269, signing off.🇮🇳❤️“

Virat Kohli concluded his Test career with 9,230 runs from 123 matches at an impressive average of 46.85, making him India’s fourth-highest run-scorer in the format. He trails only behind legends Sachin Tendulkar (15,291), Rahul Dravid (13,265), and Sunil Gavaskar (10,122).
Kohli captained the Indian Test team from 2014 to 2022, before passing the leadership to Rohit Sharma, who also stepped away from Test cricket last week on May 7.
During his tenure as captain, Kohli led India in 68 Tests, securing 40 victories. He also guided the team to the final of the inaugural ICC World Test Championship in 2021, where India were defeated by New Zealand.
