The Meaning Behind “10000 Gavaskar”
Reaching 10,000 Test runs is a landmark achievement, and Sunil Gavaskar was the first to accomplish it. In 1987, facing Pakistan in Ahmedabad, he cemented his place in history by crossing the milestone, setting a benchmark in Test cricket.
Speaking at the event, Gavaskar expressed his heartfelt gratitude for the recognition. He stated, “MCA is my mother and BCCI is my father. Thank you so much. I really appreciate the opportunity that I have got to be what I am, thanks to Indian cricket. This is a huge honour. I am very thankful to BCCI for this honour. And I would like to give it all for BCCI… so anytime anything required of me, even at this age, please feel free.”
Gavaskar’s Glorious Cricket Career
Sunil Gavaskar made an explosive debut in 1971, scoring 774 runs against the West Indies. His composure under pressure defined his career, as he confidently faced the world’s fastest bowlers on challenging pitches—often without a helmet. Against legends like Andy Roberts and Michael Holding, he not only held his ground but excelled.

Sunil Gavaskar remains India’s third-highest Test run-scorer with 10,122 runs, a remarkable feat given the challenging conditions of his era. His 34 Test centuries stood as a record for nearly two decades until Sachin Tendulkar surpassed it, cementing Gavaskar’s lasting legacy in cricket history.
