MI Coach Opines On Suryakumar Yadav’s Injury After Eliminator

Mumbai Indians (MI) head coach Mahela Jayawardene has eased concerns over Suryakumar Yadav’s fitness following their Eliminator victory against Gujarat Titans (GT) in IPL 2025. After MI’s 20-run win at the Maharaja Yadavindra Singh International Cricket Stadium on May 30, attention turned to Yadav’s well-being, as he seemed to be managing a minor issue.

Jayawardene clarified during the post-match press conference that no serious injuries were reported by the team physios. He explained that muscle tightness or soreness is normal in a high-intensity tournament like the IPL, especially given the tight schedule. Jayawardene humorously added that even if players are slightly uncomfortable, they remain eager to take the field, stating, “Even with one leg, these boys will be playing for us.”

Suryakumar’s Consistency Boosts MI’s Campaign

Despite fitness speculation, Suryakumar Yadav has continued to be a pillar for Mumbai Indians. In the Eliminator, he scored 33 runs off 20 balls, including three sixes, further solidifying his remarkable form in the tournament. This marked his 15th score of 25 or more in the season—an IPL record. With 673 runs so far, he is MI’s leading run-getter and ranks second overall in the Orange Cap race.

His consistent performances have played a pivotal role in Mumbai’s turnaround after a shaky start to the season. MI eventually secured eight wins in 14 league matches to qualify for the playoffs, and Suryakumar’s contribution has been central to that resurgence. With MI set to face Punjab Kings in Qualifier 2, he remains a key figure in their title hopes.

Bumrah and Co. Seal Eliminator Win for MI

Mumbai Indians posted a massive 228/5 after choosing to bat first. Rohit Sharma led the charge with a fluent 81, supported by Jonny Bairstow (47), Suryakumar (33), Tilak Varma (25), and Hardik Pandya (22). Gujarat’s bowlers, including R Sai Kishore and Prasidh Krishna, took two wickets each. In response, Gujarat lost captain Shubman Gill early, but Sai Sudharsan (80) and Washington Sundar (48) put up a strong fight.

Jasprit Bumrah’s timely dismissal of Sundar shifted the momentum back to MI. He later helped restrict GT to 208/6, sealing a 20-run win. MI now looks forward to another knockout clash, with hopes resting heavily on their top performers, including the in-form Suryakumar Yadav.
