Veteran leg-spinner Piyush Chawla has officially announced his retirement from all forms of cricket, ending a career that spanned over two decades. A key member of India’s victorious 2007 T20 World Cup and 2011 ODI World Cup squads, Chawla leaves behind a legacy defined by consistency and longevity.
Chawla represented India in three Test matches, 25 ODIs, and seven T20Is, collecting a total of 43 international wickets. While his international appearances were limited, he made a much bigger mark in the Indian Premier League (IPL), becoming one of the tournament’s most successful bowlers. With 192 wickets in 192 matches, he retires as the joint third-highest wicket-taker in IPL history.

His IPL journey included stints with several major franchises: Kings XI Punjab (now Punjab Kings), Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), Chennai Super Kings, and Mumbai Indians. He won the IPL title with KKR in 2014 and notably scored the winning runs in the final that year. His final IPL appearance came with Mumbai Indians in the 2024 season.
In his emotional retirement post, Chawla thanked his coaches, especially Shri K.K. Gautam and the late Shri Pankaj Saraswat, for shaping his cricketing journey. He also acknowledged the support of his IPL franchises and paid tribute to his late father, crediting him as the guiding force behind his success.
“After more than two decades on the field, the time has come to bid adieu to the beautiful game,” Chawla wrote on Instagram. “Though I step away from the crease, cricket will always live within me.”
Chawla began his professional cricket journey at just 15, representing India’s Under-19 and Uttar Pradesh Under-22 sides. His early talent translated into a fruitful domestic and IPL career, even though opportunities at the international level remained limited.
Describing his time in cricket as a blessing, Chawla noted that every moment — from donning the Indian jersey to competing in high-pressure IPL matches — will remain close to his heart. His farewell marks the end of an era for one of India’s most quietly impactful leg-spinners.
