Ruturaj Gaikwad, the captain of Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and Maharashtra, is all set to play for Yorkshire County Cricket Club in England. With this move, he becomes the fourth Indian cricketer to represent the historic club. He will be joining the team before their County Championship clash against Surrey in July and is expected to stay until the end of the season.
During his time in England, he will also participate in the One-Day Cup. This move follows the legacy of Indian greats such as Sachin Tendulkar, Yuvraj Singh, and Cheteshwar Pujara. Tendulkar was the first overseas player for Yorkshire in 1992 at just 19 years old. Yuvraj Singh had a short red-ball stint in 2003, while Cheteshwar Pujara has been a regular in recent years.
A Dream Come True for Ruturaj Gaikwad
Ruturaj Gaikwad expressed his excitement about joining the club. “I’m excited to be joining up with Yorkshire for the rest of the English domestic season,” he stated. “It has always been a goal of mine to experience cricket in this country and there is no bigger Club in England than Yorkshire.” He also acknowledged the importance of performing well, especially since this part of the season is crucial for the club’s success.
“I know how important it is that I hit the ground running at what will be a crucial part of the season. We have some vital games in the County Championship and the One Day Cup is a great opportunity to win some silverware,” he added.
Gaikwad is currently part of the India ‘A’ squad touring England. He recently featured in two unofficial Test matches against the England Lions and is scheduled to play in an intra-squad match against the Shubman Gill-led main Indian team.
Yorkshire Coach Welcomes Indian Star
Yorkshire’s head coach, Anthony McGrath, welcomed Gaikwad’s signing with great enthusiasm. “I’m extremely pleased to see Ruturaj sign with us for the second half of the season,” McGrath said. He praised Gaikwad’s well-rounded skills, highlighting how his abilities align with the team’s needs.
“He is a very accomplished cricketer with a natural all-round game that is well suited to the cricket we want to play. Ruturaj will give us some extra solidity in our batting lineup whilst having that ability to score quick runs when required. He’s an exciting talent and one I know is highly rated across the game.”
