India’s wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant kept the crowd entertained on Day 2 of the first Test against England at Headingley, Leeds, with his amusing stump mic remarks. The 27-year-old playfully reminded left-arm spinner Ravindra Jadeja of his presence on the field in a light-hearted moment.

The incident took place while Ben Duckett was at the crease. Jadeja bowled one down the leg side, forcing Pant to dive full stretch to stop the ball and prevent it from racing away for four byes. After the save, Pant stood up and delivered a cheeky comment, which was clearly picked up on the stump mic.

“Main bhi khel raha hoon bhai. Apne chauke ke chakkar mein, mera chauka mat de dena.” (Even I’m playing. Don’t give a boundary under my name.)

Later in the same over, skipper Shubman Gill had a word with Ravindra Jadeja and said:

“Abhi yeh poora confused hai Jaddu bhai. Kaunsi seedhi hai, kaunsa udhar aayega uska.” (He is fully confused now. He doesn’t know which one will straighten and which will go the other way.)

“Only Pant understands Pant” – Ravi Shastri hails wicketkeeper’s unpredictability

Meanwhile, Rishabh Pant’s knock of 134 earned high praise from former India head coach Ravi Shastri, who lauded the wicketkeeper-batter’s ability to switch gears effortlessly. Commenting on Pant’s flip celebration, Shastri said the 27-year-old was thanking the Almighty for his comeback after the 2022 car accident.

“Outrageous. He plays the numbers game beautifully, plays the way he wants. He will block for a bit and then shift gears. He has his own computer and only he knows how it works. That’s his USP. That’s what puts bowlers under pressure and makes him box office, a real entertainer and a match winner.”

“That’s why there was that celebration. Thanking the man upstairs for giving him the opportunity. I think his recovery from that accident had a lot to do with the frame of his body and being mid-20s.”
