Daren Sammy Fined For Criticizing Umpiring In WI vs AUS Test

The International Cricket Council (ICC) has officially reprimanded West Indies head coach Daren Sammy for openly criticizing third umpire Adrian Holdstock during the 2025 Test series against Australia in Barbados.

Sammy was penalized for a Level 1 offence under Article 2.7 of the ICC Code of Conduct, which addresses public criticism of match officials. He received a fine amounting to 15% of his match fee and was issued one demerit point. This was his first offence within the past 24 months. Sammy admitted to the violation and accepted the ICC’s ruling without contest.

The match itself was filled with controversy, particularly around decisions made by South African TV umpire Adrian Holdstock. Two incidents especially drew West Indies’ Shai Hope was declared out caught behind, despite video replays indicating that the ball had touched the ground before reaching wicketkeeper Alex Carey.

The second controversial call came when Roston Chase was given out LBW against Pat Cummins, even though it appeared questionable. Both dismissals occurred during West Indies’ first innings and significantly influenced the game, which the team eventually lost by 159 runs.

Sammy Raises Questions on Umpiring Standards

In the post-match press conference, Daren Sammy didn’t hold back in questioning the integrity of the umpiring process. “Yeah, look, you don’t want to get yourself in a situation where you’re wondering about certain umpires. Is there something against this team?” he asked.

Sammy also voiced his frustration over repeated decisions that went against his team, emphasizing the need for transparency. “But when you see decision after decision, then it raises the question. I know he’s here for the series. You don’t want to go in a Test match having that doubt.”

“So I want to have that conversation as to the process… so we could be all clear. Because, at the end of the day, you don’t want to be going into a Test match not trusting the umpires. And that’s not what our team is about. So we’re just looking for some clarity as to the decisions,” he added.

Chase Joins the Criticism Against Umpires

Roston Chase also voiced his disappointment after the match, arguing that umpires are not held accountable in the same way players are. According to him, errors made by officials have serious consequences on players’ careers, yet no action is taken against those in charge of key decisions. His remarks added more weight to the ongoing debate over the fairness and transparency of umpiring in international cricket.
