“One of My Happiest Memories”, Shubman Gill Reflects On Historic Edgbaston Win

Shubman Gill expressed deep joy after leading India to a historic Test win at Edgbaston, calling it a memory he will always treasure. At just 25 years and 301 days, Gill became the youngest Indian captain to win an overseas Test, breaking Sunil Gavaskar’s long-standing record.

Reflecting on the match, he said, This is something that I would cherish for the rest of my life; probably whenever I would retire, I think this would be one of my most happiest memories. Gill also took the final catch of the match, sealing India’s massive 336-run victory over England—India’s first win at Edgbaston in nine attempts. He added, I was meant to take the last catch of this match, and (I am) very content and happy that how we were able to finish this match.”

Team Effort and Personal Achievements

Shubman Gill had an excellent performance with the bat, scoring more than 400 runs in the series, including his maiden Test double-century. Speaking about the team’s all-round contributions, he said, The way everyone came in contributed with the ball, with the bat, those are huge positives.

He emphasized the importance of different players performing at crucial times, stating, When there are different people stepping up and different people performing at different stages, that’s what you want. That’s what makes a champion team, and those were some great signs for us.

The team’s strong overall effort boosted morale, and Gill believes this momentum is important moving forward, adding, “(There are) three more important matches to go; a quick turnaround after this one and I think it’s good because the momentum is now with us.

Pant’s Reflections and Team Vision

India’s vice-captain Rishabh Pant also shared his thoughts on the milestone win, recalling the team’s unfinished business at the same venue during their last tour. He said, The last time we came here, the task was incomplete at Edgbaston and this time, so happy that we were able to achieve it.

Pant highlighted the team’s aim to evolve and grow beyond past performances, stating, One thing that we always talk about is how we can learn as a team and defy all the past, whatever we have done but bringing this team together and making it to a different level, that’s all we need.” This win at Edgbaston not only marks a personal triumph for Gill but also represents India’s growing strength and unity as a Test side.
