Former cricketer Gautam Gambhir recently addressed the BCCI’s policy on limiting the presence of players’ families during international tours, defending the move despite criticism from star batter Virat Kohli.
Gambhir made it clear that while family support is important, players must remember that representing the country on tour is not a vacation.
“You are not going on a holiday,” Gambhir remarked, underlining that the main objective is national duty and performance on the field. He believes that full focus should be on cricket, and distractions—no matter how personal—should be minimized during such professional commitments.
Gambhir acknowledged the emotional value of having family around but stressed that the players must prioritize the larger mission.
“If your goal is to make your country proud, then that goal should be above all else,” he added. His statements come at a time when the BCCI is attempting to enforce more structured and disciplined tour protocols for the team.
The Background of the Controversial Policy
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) introduced the new family travel guidelines in response to India’s poor performance in the 2020-21 Border-Gavaskar Trophy in Australia. As per the current rules, players on tours longer than 45 days can have their families accompany them for up to 14 days.
For shorter tours, the limit is set at 7 days. The aim, according to BCCI, is to help players maintain focus, eliminate unnecessary distractions, and ensure a more professional environment during international engagements.
This policy has sparked differing opinions among current and former cricketers, with some seeing it as a much-needed step toward discipline and others questioning its impact on players’ mental health and well-being.
Virat Kohli Expresses Concern Over Emotional Impact
Virat Kohli, one of India’s most influential cricketers, openly voiced his disagreement with the policy. He emphasized the importance of having family around, especially after emotionally intense games.
Kohli highlighted how returning to his loved ones during tough times gave him strength and grounding. He argued that such emotional support systems are misunderstood and often overlooked by decision-makers.
Kohli’s comments reflect a more holistic view of player well-being, where mental and emotional health is considered just as important as physical performance. While Gambhir champions focus and discipline, Kohli advocates for emotional balance and the human side of being an athlete.
The contrasting views have sparked a broader conversation about how professional sports should support players both mentally and physically.
