Jasprit Bumrah Breaks Silence On Ball Controversy At Lord’s

Jasprit Bumrah, India’s star pacer, chose to respond carefully when questioned about the repeated Dukes ball changes during the third Test against England at Lord’s. The issue gained attention on Day 2, just a few overs into the play, when India raised concerns over the ball’s condition, even though it was only about 10 overs old. The umpires attempted to pass the ball through the standard hoop, but it didn’t fit, leading to a replacement.

Captain Shubman Gill was visibly upset and was seen arguing with the umpire, expressing his dissatisfaction. The matter didn’t end there. Only 48 balls later, the replacement ball too went out of shape and had to be changed again. In the final session, England also requested a ball change, but theirs passed the test, and play continued. This inconsistency drew criticism from fans and former players alike.

When Jasprit Bumrah was asked about the matter in the press conference, he maintained a composed and neutral stance, avoiding any remarks that could result in disciplinary action. “The ball changes, I don’t really control that. Obviously, I don’t want to lose out on money because I work very hard and play a lot of overs. So, I don’t want to say any controversial statements and get my match fees deducted. But we were bowling with the ball that we were given. And that’s how it is. We can’t change it. We can’t fight it. Sometimes it goes your way. Sometimes you get a bad ball. That’s how it is,” he stated.

Outstanding Performance Amid Tensions

Despite the ball controversy, Bumrah delivered a stunning performance in testing conditions, taking 5 wickets for 74 runs. His fiery spell saw the key dismissals of Harry Brook, Ben Stokes, and Joe Root, turning the game in India’s favour. The 31-year-old once again proved why he is regarded as one of the best bowlers in the world. On the first day, young cricketer Nitish Kumar Reddy praised Bumrah’s guidance, saying they follow his advice closely.

Humility in Mentoring Youngsters

In response to Nitish’s comments, Bumrah offered a humble and humorous reply. “Sir, first, that answer is a lie. He’s not asked me anything. But the other thing is that these youngsters are very confident. And they don’t need a lot of guidance or information. Whenever and whatever capacity they need me, I’m right there to help them out, and I share my experiences and what I learned in the previous tours over here,” he said.

He also added, “So that’s how as simple as I am trying to keep them. I’m not trying to jump in into every conversation, give them too much information, try to tell them to do things like I do because that’s not how it will work. Because my technique is different. My way of bowling is different, and my way of handling things will be different. And so it will be different for them. But if anything they require or any assistance they require, I try to help to the best of my capacity.”
