Despite nursing a painful finger injury, Rishabh Pant showcased his trademark resilience and aggressive intent during the third Test at Lord’s. Walking in under pressure, India’s vice-captain played a valiant knock of 74 runs off 112 balls. Though his innings ended in heartbreak due to a run-out just before lunch, Pant’s effort was nothing short of extraordinary.
His sharp strokeplay and fearless six-hitting ability lit up the historic venue. In a crucial moment, miscommunication with KL Rahul led to his dismissal, cutting short what could have been another iconic century at Lord’s. Nevertheless, Pant’s brave knock earned praise from fans and experts alike.
Shattering Historic Records
Pant’s Lord’s performance wasn’t just entertaining—it was historic. By smashing two sixes during his innings, he surpassed West Indies legend Sir Vivian Richards’ record of 34 sixes by a visiting batter in England, taking his tally to 35.
In addition, he equalled Rohit Sharma’s record of 88 sixes in Test cricket, becoming one of India’s most prolific six-hitters. He is now just two shy of Virender Sehwag’s mark of 90, further cementing his place among India’s Test legends.
Pant also broke a long-standing record held by MS Dhoni. He now holds the record for the most runs scored by an Indian wicketkeeper in a single Test tour of England, accumulating over 400 runs in the current series. Dhoni’s previous record of 349 runs during the 2014 tour stood unchallenged for over a decade.
A Wicketkeeper-Batter in a League of His Own
What makes Pant’s achievement even more remarkable is the context—it came against a high-quality English attack, in challenging conditions, and while dealing with physical discomfort.
By becoming the first overseas wicketkeeper to score more than 400 runs in a single Test series in England, Pant has raised the bar for keeper-batters around the world. His consistency, audacity, and flair have redefined what a modern-day wicketkeeper can achieve with the bat.
Beyond the numbers, Pant’s spirited performance symbolises India’s new brand of Test cricket—fearless, aggressive, and unrelenting. Despite missing out on a hundred, his effort at Lord’s will be remembered for its impact and significance in Indian cricket history.
