Dilip Vengsarkar Questions Jasprit Bumrah’s Selective Participation
Jasprit Bumrah

Former Indian cricketer Dilip Vengsarkar has openly criticized pacer Jasprit Bumrah for skipping matches during the ongoing Test series against England. Speaking on Bumrah’s absence in the second Test, Vengsarkar expressed his disapproval of the idea of players “choosing” when to play.

He stated that once a player is part of the touring squad, they must be available for all matches unless they’re seriously injured. He emphasized that personal preference should not dictate participation in international fixtures, especially in high-stakes Test series like the one currently underway. Vengsarkar argued that representing India comes with a commitment that cannot be part-time.

Workload Management Sparks Debate

Bumrah, who missed the second Test, was reportedly rested as part of a pre-planned workload management strategy. While team management has not indicated any injury concerns, the decision was taken to prevent burnout and ensure longevity for one of India’s most valuable bowling assets.

Bumrah had returned to Test cricket after recovering from a major back injury in 2024 and was India’s standout performer in the first Test, taking a five-wicket haul.

Despite an 8-day gap between Tests, he was rested in the second match, raising eyebrows among fans and experts alike. Vengsarkar’s comments reflect growing unease among cricket veterans who feel that rotating players during an intense series sends the wrong message.

India’s Struggles and the Road Ahead

India’s performance in the five-match series has been inconsistent. After losing the opening Test, they bounced back emphatically to win the second. However, they faltered again in the third Test at Lord’s, losing by a narrow margin of 22 runs. With England now leading 2-1 in the series, every match counts. Critics believe that resting a key player like Bumrah during such a crucial phase might have cost India valuable momentum.

The decision has ignited a broader debate about how modern cricket balances player welfare with national duty. While workload management is essential in today’s game, many argue it must not come at the cost of competitive edge and team consistency in marquee series.
