Rovman Powell on the Verge of Surpassing Chris Gayle

West Indies T20I captain Rovman Powell is on the brink of a significant personal achievement as he needs just 25 more runs to surpass the iconic Chris Gayle and become the second-highest run-scorer for the West Indies in T20 Internationals. This milestone could be achieved in the opening match of their upcoming five-game T20I series against Australia, set to begin on July 21, 2025.

Powell has featured in 95 T20I matches and batted in 83 innings, scoring a total of 1,875 runs. His performances include a century and nine half-centuries, with a career-best score of 107. Known for his aggressive style, Powell boasts a strike rate of 142.07 and averages 26.40.

Chris Gayle’s Legacy in T20Is

Chris Gayle, widely regarded as one of the most destructive batsmen in cricket history, currently sits in second place on West Indies‘ all-time T20I run-scoring list with 1,899 runs. He played 79 matches and batted in 75 innings, maintaining a solid average of 27.92 and a strike rate of 137.50.

Gayle’s T20I career highlights include two centuries, with a top score of 117, and 14 half-centuries. Despite stepping away from the international scene, his contributions continue to set a benchmark for emerging players like Powell. Surpassing Gayle would not only be a personal victory for Powell but also symbolize the changing guard in West Indies T20 cricket.

Pooran Leads the Pack and the Series Outlook

Nicholas Pooran, who recently announced his retirement from T20Is, leads the West Indies in T20I runs with 2,275 in 106 matches across 97 innings. He scored 13 half-centuries and recorded a personal best of 98, with a strike rate of 136.39 and an average of 26.14.

As the West Indies look to bounce back from a 3–0 whitewash in the Test series against Australia, Powell’s anticipated achievement could boost the team’s morale heading into the T20I series. Historically, both teams have been evenly matched in this format, with 11 wins each in their head-to-head encounters. This upcoming series is not just about individual milestones, but also a chance for West Indies to regain their footing in the shorter format of the game.
