During Day 4 of the fourth Test against England at Old Trafford, young Indian batter Sai Sudharsan was seen sharing his struggle to maintain the shine on the old ball with all-rounder Washington Sundar, speaking in Tamil. By then, India had already started using the second new ball, as the English batters continued to pile on runs and stretch their lead significantly.
The Indian pacers, Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj, began the day hoping to exploit the overcast conditions following two sunny days. Bumrah managed to dismiss Liam Dawson early on, but with England’s innings dragging past 140 overs, captain Shubman Gill introduced Washington Sundar into the attack.
The off-spinner relied heavily on the condition of the ball to get some drift and pose problems for the English batters. He had been effective earlier with the older ball, managing to outfox Ollie Pope and Harry Brook with subtle air movement. However, Sai Sudharsan pointed out the challenge he was facing in keeping one side of the ball shiny to assist that movement.
“I am shining the ball, but it is not shining,” Sudharsan’s comments to Washington Sundar were caught on the stump mic.
இந்த Ball Shine-ஏ ஆகாது போலயே!🗣️😅

Washington Sundar and Sai Sudharsan not only represent Tamil Nadu together in domestic cricket but also share the dressing room in the IPL, playing for Gujarat Titans (GT) in the 2025 season. Earlier in the series, during the opening Test at Headingley in Leeds, KL Rahul was also heard speaking to Sudharsan in Tamil while they were batting together in the second innings.

Since being brought into the attack on Day 4, the off-spinner has maintained control from one end, having bowled seven consecutive overs so far. Ravindra Jadeja has also joined the bowling attack, giving the fast bowlers a breather as they wait for the third new ball.
England stand at 651 for 8 after 155 overs, with the off-spinner returning figures of 2 for 98 from his 27 overs.
