India captain Shubman Gill was dismissed through a costly run-out on Day 1 of the fifth Test against England at The Oval on Thursday, July 31. The right-hander was out for 21 off 35 deliveries, leaving the visitors struggling at 83/3. The run-out occurred in the 28th over of India’s first innings.

Facing a length delivery from Gus Atkinson on off-stump, Gill gently pushed the ball towards the off-side and attempted a quick single. However, the ball was too close to the bowler, who reacted swiftly, collected it cleanly, and struck the stumps with a direct hit. Gill, caught midway down the pitch, had no chance to recover and lost his wicket needlessly.

Ollie Pope’s England dominate as rain halts play in the 5th Test vs India

England seized early control on Day 1 of the fifth Test with a sharp bowling and fielding effort under cloudy skies. Gus Atkinson struck first, trapping Yashasvi Jaiswal lbw, while Chris Woakes removed KL Rahul (bowled) for 14 in the opening session. Shubman Gill’s run-out added to India’s troubles after stand-in skipper Ollie Pope elected to bowl first.

At the latest update, India were 85/3 in 29 overs, with Sai Sudharsan on 28 and Karun Nair yet to score. Rain interrupted play again shortly after lunch, following just six overs of action in the second session. Earlier, India made four changes, resting top-ranked bowler Jasprit Bumrah and missing vice-captain Rishabh Pant due to injury.

England are also without regular captain Ben Stokes, sidelined with an injury. England hold a 2-1 lead in the five-match series, putting India in a must-win situation to avoid a third straight Test series defeat. The visitors previously lost the 2024/25 Border-Gavaskar Trophy in Australia 1-3 and suffered a 0-3 whitewash at home against New Zealand.
