PCB Bans Use Of ‘Pakistan’ In Private Leagues After India Snub

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has taken a bold step following the controversy during the World Championships of Legends (WCL) 2025. In the tournament held in the UK, Indian players refused to play against the ‘Pakistan Champions’ team.

This decision led to outrage and embarrassment for Pakistan. The PCB felt this refusal twice in one tournament created the image of a political clash disguised as a sporting event. As a result, they have decided to “ban the use of the country’s name in all private cricket leagues“.

The decision was taken after a detailed discussion in the Board of Directors meeting on Thursday”, confirming that this was not a hasty call, but a well-thought-out response. The board viewed the situation as disrespectful to Pakistan’s image on an international stage and wanted to ensure it doesn’t happen again.

Name of Country Banned in Private Cricket Leagues

PCB sources stated that Indian players’ refusal to compete was seen as deeply insulting. “The high-level authorities felt Indian players refusing to play Pakistan in the WCL’s second edition twice is hurtful to the name of the country”, highlighting the emotional and symbolic value attached to national representation. Due to this, the board has decided that “No private cricket league can use ‘Pakistan’ in its team names or branding without PCB’s direct approval.

Although the ongoing team ‘Pakistan Legends’ has been allowed to play in the final against South Africa, this will be an exception. Several teams in minor leagues across Zimbabwe, Kenya, and the USA have reportedly used the name without permission in the past. That practice is now officially over.

Legal Action And Government Support To Enforce Ban

To enforce this new rule, PCB will take strict legal action against violators. “All private organizations will face legal action in case they use Pakistan’s name. PCB has the sole right to allow its use for cricket events if it finds the authenticity of the League and the organization as reputable”, the sources said.

The Pakistan government and the IPC (Inter-Provincial Coordination) committee have also stepped in, advising the PCB to monitor and regulate the usage of the country’s name more strictly. This step is meant to protect Pakistan’s cricket image globally and ensure no organization misuses the country’s identity for unofficial tournaments.
