The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is expected to announce India’s Asia Cup squad on August 19 or 20, depending on when the medical team from the Centre of Excellence’s Sports Science department submits the fitness updates of key players. This step is crucial for the selectors, led by Ajit Agarkar, who are determined to include only fully fit cricketers in the final line-up.
One of the most closely watched updates is on captain Suryakumar Yadav, who is making a comeback after hernia surgery. He has resumed batting practice at the National Cricket Academy in Bengaluru, but the final clearance from the medical staff is still pending. The Asia Cup will be a vital preparatory tournament ahead of major ICC events later this year, so the team management is leaving nothing to chance.
India’s batting unit is currently overflowing with talent, creating a major selection headache. The likely top five, Abhishek Sharma, Sanju Samson, Suryakumar Yadav, Tilak Varma, and Hardik Pandya, offer a balance of aggression and stability, making it hard for others to break in. While this depth is a strength, it also means that some deserving names may not find a place in the final squad.
1. Sanju Samson
Sanju Samson is part of the primary batting group under consideration, but intense competition in the top order could make his role less certain. If the selectors stick with their current combination, Samson may have to rotate with other batters or even warm the bench, despite his strong performances.
2. Yashasvi Jaiswal

Yashasvi Jaiswal has been in sensational touch in domestic tournaments and the IPL. However, with the top-order slots already settled, he may have to settle for a place on the reserves or standby list. His omission from the main squad would be a case of timing rather than talent, as the team already has a set batting structure.
3. KL Rahul
Perhaps the biggest surprise could be the exclusion of KL Rahul, India’s preferred ODI wicketkeeper-batsman. His usual batting positions—number three or four—are already occupied by in-form players, and the management is focused on a more flexible middle-order setup. This shift in strategy could see Rahul miss the Asia Cup, despite his proven experience and match-winning ability.
The final announcement will reveal whether the selectors choose experience, youth, or a balanced mix—but for now, these three players’ spots remain uncertain.
