Team India off-spinner Washington Sundar admitted that he grew up admiring head coach Gautam Gambhir, following his crucial role in India’s 2-2 draw in the Test series in England. The 25-year-old has been a consistent member of the Indian team since Gambhir took charge as head coach last year.

Sundar scored his first Test century during India’s penultimate match of the England series in Manchester, helping the team secure a draw on the final day. The left-hander had a memorable series with the bat, amassing 284 runs at an average above 47, including several important innings.

Reflecting on Gambhir in an interview with Wisden a week after the England tour, Sundar said,

“100%, he also No. 5 on the back of his jersey. And obviously he was a left hander, who was extremely elegant. The only thing I didn’t enjoy was bowling to him in the IPL. He was someone who was super succesful against me but he is an amazing human being. He has had so much faith in all of us that we would fight at all times and win the game. Really glad to see him happy at the end of the series.”

Washington Sundar Praises Gautam Gambhir And Shubman Gill For Spot-On Communication

Washington Sundar praised Team India’s captain Shubman Gill and head coach Gautam Gambhir for their clear and effective communication during the England series. The tour marked Gill’s debut as Test captain, after Rohit Sharma retired just a month prior to the series.

“Credit to them for having such a calm dressing room throughout the series. Their communication was precise and clear on what was expected. Both of them have a lot of belief in their players and that really helps in the bigger picture,” said Sundar.

Gambhir faced significant pressure heading into the series, following consecutive Test series defeats against New Zealand and Australia. After falling behind 1-2 in the first three Tests against England, the team staged a comeback, drawing the fourth Test and clinching the series with a six-run victory in the finale.
