Shubman Gill’s remarkable run in England—where he scored more than 750 runs in five Tests and claimed the Player of the Series award—has not guaranteed him a place in India’s squad for the upcoming Asia Cup 2025. According to a RevSportz report, Gill’s chances of making the cut for the T20I tournament remain slim.
This is not a reflection of his talent or recent form, but rather the stability and balance the selectors see in India’s current T20I combination. Gill, who last appeared in a T20 international in July 2024, might find it difficult to break into a side that has been performing consistently in the shortest format.
Strong Competition in a Settled T20I Setup
One of the key challenges for Gill is the fierce competition within India’s batting lineup. The squad already features in-form players like Sanju Samson, who has been a reliable middle-order performer; Abhishek Sharma, the current India T20I captain and top-ranked batter in the format; and Tilak Varma, who has been steadily building a reputation as a dependable run-getter. The selectors are cautious about disrupting this settled combination ahead of a major tournament.
Bringing Gill into the fold could mean sidelining one of these established names, a move they may be reluctant to make given the current team chemistry. Even though Gill’s recent performances have been exceptional, especially in longer formats, selectors often weigh the demands and rhythm of T20 cricket differently.
T20 and IPL Form Not Enough for Automatic Inclusion
Gill’s case is further strengthened by his outstanding IPL 2025 season, where he amassed 650 runs in 15 matches at a blistering strike rate of nearly 156. These numbers prove his adaptability and capability in the fast-paced T20 environment. However, the selectors’ focus appears to be on preserving the structure and roles that have brought the team recent success.
In T20 cricket, where match situations demand specific player roles and chemistry, replacing someone in form for another equally talented option is a complex decision. Gill’s exclusion—if it happens—would not be about merit but about the team’s overall tactical approach.
While his fans may find the possible snub surprising given his recent achievements, it underscores how selection in cricket often depends as much on timing, combinations, and strategic fit as it does on individual brilliance. For now, Gill might have to wait for an opening to reestablish himself in the shortest format at the international level.
