Ruturaj Gaikwad, who has been absent from the Indian cricket setup for more than a year, reminded everyone of his class with a commanding century in the Buchi Babu Invitational tournament. Representing Maharashtra, the stylish right-hander showcased his determination after a difficult start to the campaign. In his first two outings, Gaikwad could only manage scores of 1 and 11, while he missed the second game entirely.

However, in his third match against Himachal Pradesh, he produced the kind of innings that underlined his hunger to return to the national fold. With patience, skill, and aggression, Gaikwad played a captain’s knock, marking his return in style and sending a strong message to the selectors ahead of the new domestic season.

Partnership That Changed the Game

Gaikwad found the perfect ally in young opener Arshin Kulkarni as the duo dismantled the Himachal attack with a massive 220-run partnership. Both batters not only steadied the innings but also dominated the bowling with fluent stroke play. Gaikwad’s innings was particularly special, as he smashed four sixes in a single over, bringing the crowd to life. He ended his stay at the crease with a superb 133 off 144 deliveries, decorated with 10 boundaries and four towering sixes.

On the other end, Kulkarni displayed his growing maturity with an equally important 146, ensuring Maharashtra built a commanding position in the match. Their partnership not only rescued the side but also highlighted the depth of batting talent in Maharashtra’s ranks.

A Year of Challenges and Determination

For Gaikwad, this innings was more than just runs on the board—it was redemption after a testing year. His 2025 IPL season was cut short due to an untimely injury, which forced him to sit out during crucial games. Later, although he was named in the India A squad for the tour of England, he failed to make the playing XI, a disappointment that dented his chances of staking a claim for the senior team. Adding to the setbacks, his County Championship stint with Yorkshire had to be cancelled because of personal reasons. These hurdles could have broken the spirit of many players, but Gaikwad chose to fight back.

By scoring this century in the Buchi Babu tournament, he not only regained his lost rhythm but also made a strong case for himself ahead of the domestic and international season. His performance serves as a reminder of his talent and resilience, qualities that make him a vital prospect for Indian cricket’s future.
